Saint Columba Slate Wall Art, Reclaimed Ballachulish Scottish Roof Slate

Saint Columba Slate Wall Art, Reclaimed Ballachulish Scottish Roof Slate

A piece of Scotland’s sacred landscape, engraved on genuine reclaimed West Highland / Ballachulish slate.

This Saint Columba plaque is made from natural Scottish roof slate that has already lived a long life outdoors — weathering the west coast air for more than 100 years before being reclaimed and given new purpose as a piece of devotional artwork for the home or garden.

This engraved Saint Columba plaque is made from genuine reclaimed West Highland / Ballachulish slate — a beautiful blue-grey Scottish roofing slate with a deep sense of place, age and character.

Rather than using a new manufactured blank, each plaque is cut from reclaimed roof slate that has already spent more than a century exposed to the Scottish weather. The marks, texture, old nail hole, cleaved surface and irregular edges are part of its story. These are not flaws; they are the quiet evidence of a real material with a real past.

The design shows Saint Columba, one of the great saints of the Celtic Christian tradition, travelling by boat across the western seas. For us, this image feels especially rooted in the west of Scotland: the movement of sea, sail, island, prayer and pilgrimage. The boat, cross, waves and flowing linework are designed in a style classic to Paisley Honey — bold, devotional, Celtic-inspired and made to feel at home on natural Scottish slate.

This piece can be displayed indoors as devotional wall art, or outdoors as a garden plaque. It is especially suited to a garden wall, fence, prayer corner, porch, shed, greenhouse, hallway, home altar, cottage interior or quiet reflective space.

Each piece is individually engraved in our workshop in Scotland.

Approximate size

Each slate is naturally variable, but pieces are typically around:

18cm x 28cm x 1cm

Because this is reclaimed natural slate, the exact size, shape, edge profile, surface markings, colour tone and hole placement will vary from piece to piece. The listing photos show representative examples rather than a factory-identical product.

Why each one is different

Every plaque is made from genuine reclaimed Ballachulish / West Highland roof slate.

That means each piece may show:

  • Natural cleaved texture
  • Irregular hand-cut or weathered edges
  • Surface marks from age and use
  • Original nail or hanging holes
  • Slight colour variation
  • Differences in shape and proportions
  • Subtle signs of its previous life as roofing slate

This is part of the character of the piece. Your plaque will not be identical to the photos, but it will be made in the same spirit, using the same design and the same reclaimed Scottish slate.

Indoor or outdoor display

This slate has already survived outdoors as roofing slate for more than 100 years, so it is well suited to garden and outdoor display. As with any handmade engraved item, the appearance may continue to weather naturally over time if kept outside.

For the longest-lasting appearance, display in a sheltered outdoor position where possible.

A meaningful gift

This plaque would make a thoughtful gift for someone with a devotion to Saint Columba, a love of Scotland, Celtic Christianity, monastic spirituality, island pilgrimage, or sacred garden spaces.

It is a piece of reclaimed Scottish heritage, transformed into devotional artwork.
