Our Lady of Aparecida: A Divine Beacon of Love and Hope
Updated: Sep 22
Our Lady of Aparecida is Brazil’s national patroness and one of the country’s most loved Marian devotions. Her story begins not with a royal court or a grand cathedral, but with three fishermen, a small clay image and an unexpected catch in the Paraíba River.
The discovery in the Paraíba River
In October 1717, fishermen Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso and João Alves were asked to provide fish for an important visitor. After hours without success, their nets brought up the body of a small terracotta statue of the Immaculate Conception. A second cast recovered its head. Tradition says that the catch then became abundant.

Why she is called Aparecida
Aparecida means “the one who appeared”. The recovered image was kept first in homes, where neighbours gathered to pray, and devotion gradually grew. A chapel, then larger churches, followed as pilgrims came to seek Mary’s intercession and to bring their joys, illness, grief and gratitude.
Patroness of Brazil
The image was solemnly crowned in 1904, and in 1930 Pope Pius XI proclaimed Our Lady of Aparecida the principal patroness of Brazil. Her feast is celebrated on 12 October. The National Shrine at Aparecida has become a major place of pilgrimage and sacramental life.

The meaning of the devotion
Catholic devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida points beyond the image to Christ. Mary is honoured as the mother who listens, accompanies and leads believers towards her Son. The small darkened clay figure has also become a powerful sign of dignity and hope for ordinary people, especially those whose lives are easily overlooked.
